Worldwide Puns launched the Bay Area Pun-Off in January 2016, when forty willing and witty friends crammed into a living room in Oakland, CA for an experiment that shameless pun enthusiast Jonah Spear gleefully dubbed, “Get Thee to a Punnery, The First Ever Bay Area Pun-Off!”
As a vibrant pun-slinging community sprang to life in San Francisco, “BAPO,” as it came to be called by regulars, enjoyed good press from Wired Magazine, The Guardian, and several other local outlets. We also formed loving and moewtually beneficial relationships with local orgs doing great work like SPUR and Litquake.
Now, back from the live-show hiatus (actually, our audiences love us) and bolstered by the feeling of camaraderie, community, and joy at this event, BAPO has rebranded, streamlined, and, relaunched, expanding up and down the west coast, creating new partnerships with venues in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
The pun-off is an all ages show that may still have some adult content like racy topics or grown-up words - and we’re an inclusive and warm show which means we aim for comedy that doesn’t punch down. Underneath the comedy event appearance of Worldwide Puns shows, we’re really a community project aimed at connection, celebration, and joy - a radical act in today’s often dark seeming world. We’re reworking what competition looks like and indulging in some serious and silly punnery in the process.
